About This Category

The drum is a member of the percussion family of instruments. This “striking” instrument is created with a drumhead or drum skin that is stretched over a circular base or shell. The drum skin is then struck with either the hands or drumsticks, depending upon the style of drum being played.

There are several essential skills a player must learn before playing the drums. When taking drum lessons, players must first learn how to hold the drumsticks. Perhaps the most important skill, there are specific ways in which the drumsticks should be positioned in order to get the correct, natural bounce of the stick. There are three main types of grips used to play the drum: the traditional grip, matched grip, and French grip. Each grip has its own unique hold, but must still be done correctly to create the desired sound.

Counting time is another important skill to learn during drum lessons. Students must also learn how to read the music. The beat of the drum music can move very quickly. Therefore, it is essential that each drummer know how to read the notes. Notes and counting time must be taught in order to master the art of playing the drum.

During the first lessons, potential drummers will also learn is how to tune their drums. This is relatively easy, and also necessary for making the drum sound its best. Learning these basic skills is essential for becoming a superior drummer. Throughout drum lessons, these skills are taught and practiced to ensure that proper play and the best sound is established by the drummers.
