About This Category

When someone first becomes ill or injured, it is often the first response that is the most critical. Therefore, it is essential that first aid is applied during these crucial moments. Knowing the proper first aid steps and procedures can save someone’s life.

First aid is the first response before professional medical care is available. First aid can range from bandaging cuts and scrapes, to doctoring burns, to administering CPR. Becoming familiar with the different first aid treatments can help you be prepared for any medical emergencies that may arise.

The first step in being prepared for medical emergencies is having a first-aid kit easily accessible. The items in the kit should be stored in a place that is easily accessible. The first aid kit may include bandages, antibiotic creams, aspirin, and any other medications appropriate for the care of your family. Be sure to keep these items separate from daily health care items, such as toothpaste or hairspray. Be sure to label every item in the kit, as well as the box you are using for the first aid supplies.

Once your first aid kit is assembled, the next step is learning the proper response for first aid in a variety of emergency situations. Know the basic procedures for the different possible emergencies. For example, if a person is injured, know whether or not you can safely move them. Also be sure they are breathing. If not, you might need to administer CPR. For stings, use medications that will help to control pain and keep the swelling down. Then, call a doctor for more care instructions. Knowing general first aid care can be extremely important in case of an emergency. Educate yourself on the proper care. After all, someone’s life may depend on it.
