About This Category
Vocational Education Training (VET) differs from college and universities in that the schools prepare students for occupations that are considered more manual or technical. These skills are generally connected to specific trades or vocations. Vocational Education Training educates students for particular jobs. The knowledge is often acquired through hands-on learning. This form of training is often considered to be one of apprenticeship learning. Vocational training can also be completed at the high school level.
In the late 1900’s, most vocational training involved the teaching in fields such as automobile mechanics and welders. However, many other businesses and even government systems are now utilizing vocational training as a means to locate and train potential employees. Vocational education now includes the retail industry, tourism, and technological services, among many other trades and occupations.
In Australia, the vocational education system includes training in the traditional trades, as those mentioned above. However, the training has expanded to service oriented trades as well. In the education training, employers often create contracts with the students. These contracts require that future employees complete the apprentice training before being hired in their desired fields.
Today, some vocational educational training schools also offer bachelor degrees in specialized areas. These degrees are generally offered in areas that traditional colleges and universities do not offer.
Vocational education is a way for students to receive hands-on learning in their desired trades or skills. Generally taking between one to three years, this form of training allows potential employees to gain the skills necessary to receive employment in specific fields.
