About This Category

Developing communication skills involves much more than increasing vocabulary. Communication skills involve the five senses and knowledge. Developing communication skills includes learning to listen and consider the other person, their position and the meaning of their words. Since each person has their own filters of language, vocabulary level, and social experience through which they hear and interpret information, their perception must be taken into account. Most miscommunication can be contributed to poor listening and misinterpretation.

The method of communication must also be considered. While some people respond best to verbal instructions, others better interpret a written message, and some need both.

In addition to speech and vocabulary people communicate in many other ways. While mind reading is not realistic, people project outward behaviors that signal their feelings and states on mind.

Posture can portray emotions, attitude, nervousness, defensiveness, anger, fear or discomfort. Facial expressions can communicate stress, happiness, sadness, anger, or boredom. Arms and hand movements and positions can signal many different messages. Movement such as finger drumming, foot tapping, leg shaking, or other fidgeting behavior can indicate nervousness or boredom. Eye movement can also tell a lot. If a speaker maintains eye contact then he or she is probably comfortable and confident. Even breathing sends messages. A person who is nervous, afraid, angry, or distracted will often breathe heavy or in a noticeable way.

In addition developing written communication skills can be critical to getting things accomplished. People are often judged by how well they write and the words they choose.
