In horse riding schools, students are educated in equestrianism, which is the ability to ride a horse. Students generally take lessons to learn to ride for work, ride for recreation or ride to compete. Horse riding schools vary from tiny operations to large enterprises. Depending on the size of the school, some may offer services beyond riding lessons including horse sales, boarding, guided tours, grooming, and veterinary services. The instructors at a horse riding school should be accredited by a recognized equestrian association such as the Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA), American Association for Horsemanship Safety (AAHS), or the American Riding Instructors Association (ARIA). In some states, horse riding schools and stables are legally required to obtain licensing. This requirement varies from state to state. There are also smaller horse riding schools that are not licensed or accredited. Although these schools should be evaluated on a case by case basis, healthy horses, clean stables, and an emphasis on safety first often indicate a well run establishment. Students can always ask to observe a lesson prior to signing up for lessons in order to determine if the school is right for them. Horse riding schools offer lessons for a wide range of experience levels. Students may already know how to ride and want to learn advanced techniques such as reining, show jumping, racing, rodeo, driving, vaulting, dressage, or endurance riding. Other students may have never been on a horse before in their lives and simply want to learn to ride for recreational purposes. Some schools offer both private and group lessons, depending on the student’s preference.
"Our love for Western movies can undoubtedly be attributed to our fascination with “the cowboy way,” but without Trigger, Roy Rogers would have had little to sing about. Horses have made a significant contribution to pop culture: Gene Autry rode Champion, the Lone Ranger saved the day with Silver, and John Wayne saddled up with Duke. Today, as Hollywood studios continue to produce films like “Unforgiven” and “The Missing”—not to mention HBO’s new, critically acclaimed series “Deadwood”—millions of students, both young and old, are flocking to stables to learn the classic art of horseback riding. So, how do you learn to ride like a pro?" -
