about this category

Quilting is a craft that uses various fabrics to create patterns and designs. Quilting can be accomplished by hand sewing, sewing machine, or through the use of a quilting machine, commonly known as a long arm. Quilting can be used to create a variety of products, including bedding, wall hangings, and even clothing.

Simple tools are needed for hand quilting: a quilting frame or hoop, thread, and a needle. Quilters use the tools to layer material together, forming a pattern. The quilting frames are used to help hold the quilt. Most quilts are done in three layers: the top layer, the batting or insulation, and then the backing. These three layers allow for more padding and warmth. However, summer quilts are made using only two layers. The batting is left out to make for a lighter blanket.

There are basic steps involved in quilting. First, the pattern and fabrics are selected. Next, the fabrics are measured and cut. Blocks are made to form the patterns. The blocks are then sewn together to finish the top layer of the quilt. The batting and backing are sewn to the top layer. The edges are also sewn to create a clean finish.

Many believe that quilting originated as a means of creating warmth for soldiers. In the Middle Ages, quilting was used to create heavy armor. But, quilting has been around for hundreds of years, with pictures depicting the ancient Egyptians wearing quilted-style clothing. In the 1800’s, many slaves in the United Sates made story quilts. These quilts contained symbols that depicted the life of a slave during this time period.

Quilting is an ageless art. Used thousands of years ago, this hobby continues in all areas of the world today.
